Tourism organization Explore Waterloo Region has launched a new electronic sports commission in association with Subnation Media. The organization will support and promote video gaming programs, events and initiatives. The group will work with regional municipalities, local businesses, academic institutions and video game firms to highlight the region as a destination capable of hosting video game tournaments. This new Waterloo Region Esports Commission has begun its activities by sponsoring a “virtual esports camp” hosted by Sports Camps Canada.
“In recent years, esports has become a global phenomenon, on track to surpass $1 billion in global revenues in 2021,” said Allister Scorgie, director of the sport hosting office at Explore Waterloo Region. “With Waterloo Region already having local endemic gaming and technology companies, we believe esports will play an integral role in the future of our tourism efforts and will have a positive economic impact for years to come.”
