Indiegraf Media launches in Vancouver
By Adnews Staff
A new company called Indiegraf Media has launched in Vancouver, describing itself as “a network of journalist-entrepreneurs and independently-owned digital publishers.” The aim of the company is to make it easier to launch digital news outlets focusing on local communities. Participating publishers can share a pool of resources intended to expand digital outlets to fill local news gaps. Indiegraf is supported with funding from the Google News Initiative and Facebook Journalism Project, which have also provided in-kind advertising credits for participating publishers. The Inspirit Foundation has also provided support. The company is headed by chief executive officer Erin Millar and chief technology officer Caitlin Havlak.
“Obscured by headlines about a local news apocalypse is a generational opportunity to transform the news industry to serve our communities better,” said Millar. “Entrepreneurship and innovation are urgently needed to fill gaps in local news. Media ownership can't only be for people who can code or have buckets of money. It's for anyone who believes in the mission of journalism.”
