Canadian restaurants begin Takeout Day promotion

A group of several hundred Canadian restaurant owners, chefs, culinary professionals and celebrities across Canada have begun an initiative called “Takeout Day” in an effort to support the food service industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. The national promotion encourages consumers to order takeout food from a local restaurant each Wednesday. The initiative will launch with an online event on Facebook on April 15 called “Canada's Great Kitchen Party.” It will feature musical performances and appearances from a number of Canadian celebrities and athletes. The effort also includes a website at <http://www.canadatakeout.com>.

“Restaurants are vital to the social and economic fabric of communities across Canada, but operating a foodservice business is tough, even in the best of times,” said Shanna Munro, president and CEO of Restaurants Canada. “Not only was our industry among the first to feel the impacts of COVID-19, we've been one of the hardest hit so far, with nearly two thirds of our workforce now lost. We would love to see Canadians embrace ‘Takeout Day’ and support those restaurants who are still able to operate through takeout or delivery.”
