Business sustainability conference Globe Series has begun a new program called the “Climate and Sports Initiative” in association with Toronto Pearson International Airport and the City of Mississauga. According to the company, the multi-year program is intended to use sports to raise awareness of climate change among Canadians.
The first campaign of the initiative is called “Save Pond Hockey” and will consist of a series of community events involving Canadian Olympic athletes, including hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser. Participants will take part in an indoor hockey shoot-out with Wickenheiser. The events will be supported with social media activities. A second phase of the program will consist of a climate change mentoring program between Canadian Olympic athletes and schools and other community groups.
“Canada's national sport provides a common language for talking about how our everyday choices affect the way we live, work and play,” said Mike Gerbis, CEO of the Globe Series. “The Climate and Sports Initiative will empower every Canadian to get in the game when it comes to fighting climate change.”
