Advertising Standards Canada releases 2014 complaint report
Advertising Standards Canada of Toronto has released its Year In Review report of advertising complaints for 2014. The report provides information about complaints submitted to the organization by consumers for review under the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. In 2014, these comprised 1,274 complaints about 864 ads. Of these, 80 complaints about 36 ads were found by the organization to be in breach of the code. Fifty-four percent of the complaints pursued alleged inaccurate or misleading advertising. According to the report, retail advertising attracted the most complaints of all categories.
"Through their complaints, Canadians tell us they are concerned about ads they believe are misleading or inaccurate, such as offers that were not honoured by retailers, and claims that could not be substantiated," said Janet Feasby, vice-president of standards at the organization.
Advertising Standards Canada is a national not-for-profit body that administers the Canadian Code of Advertising Standards. Its members include advertisers, advertising agencies and media organizations.
