Canadian Transportation Agency enforces airfare ad regulations

The Ottawa-based Canadian Transportation Agency has issued a notice stating that it will now apply a stricter approach to the enforcement of the new regulations regarding all-inclusive air price advertising approved in December 2012. The notice states that advertisers will be expected to maintain compliance on an on-going basis, regardless of the media used. According to the agency, over the past five months it has issued a number of formal warnings to airfare advertisers. In addition, it has issued monetary penalties of $40,000 and $8,000 respectively to Itravel2000.com and FlightNetwork for not advertising the total all-inclusive price on their on-line booking systems despite warnings. "Monitoring air price advertising will be an on-going effort that will help us reach our goal of price transparency," said Geoff Hare, chair and CEO of the agency. "This will ensure consumers can easily determine the total price of advertised air services, and will promote fair competition in air price advertising."
