Recycling awareness campaign begins in Edmonton

The City of Edmonton Waste Management Branch has begun an awareness campaign intended to encourage apartment and condominium residents to recycle only acceptable materials through the city's Blue Bin program. The initiative includes motion-sensor sound devices mounted in 400 blue bins around the city. When approached the bins begin singing one of three songs about the kinds of materials that are appropriate for recycling. "The Bin Blues campaign is a fun way to remind people of the importance of recycling, and of recycling the right materials," said Connie Boyce, director of community relations for the Waste Management Branch. "The objective is to reduce the number of plant shutdowns that are caused by unacceptable material and to prevent injury to workers."
