CANWEST SET TO BUY NETSTAR

Winnipeg-based CanWest Global Communications Corp. may be getting deeper into the specialty channel market. The broadcaster is set to buy NetStar Communications for over $900 million, according to a report by The Toronto Star. NetStar is the parent company of The Sports Network and The Discovery Channel. CanWest already operates Prime, Canada's Entertainment Network, a specialty channel that caters to an older audience. NetStar is owned by ESPN of New York, Montreal's Stephen Bronfman, pension fund Caisse de depot et placement du Quebec., Reitman's Ltd. of Montreal and a management team.
