BLOCKBUSTER OPENS FOR BUSINESS IN POLAND

U.S.-based Blockbuster Inc. moved into the Poland market this week with the opening of its first outlet in Warsaw. The company plans to open 110 stores in the Polish Republic over the next 10 years. There will be 10 Blockbuster stores by the end of 1999. Initially, the outlets will be in larger cities such as Lodz, Drakow and Kotowice, but the video retailer intends to expand throughout the country. The Blockbuster outlets will carry up to 8,000 movies to rent, as well as video games and accessories, Nintendo 64 and Sony Playstation game consoles for rental or purchase, compact discs, ice cream, drinks and candy. Recently, Blockbuster announced that it has bought the Movieland video chain in western Australia. Movieland operates 204 stores.
