MORE MEN BUYING THEIR OWN COLOGNE

More men between the ages of 25 and 49 are buying their own fragrances, according to a U.S. survey by Datamonitor. In the past, women bought men's colognes as gifts, but now over 30% of men are buying their own. The main reason is that this demographic group is staying single longer and becoming increasingly self-reliant for personal items. The study also found that older women spend more on beauty products than the younger generation and manufacturers are beginning to target the older market. For example, Maybelline has introduced a line of cosmetics called Maybelline Revitalizing that targets baby boomers. Datamonitor says manufacturers are shying away from using models in ads aimed at mature women, using illustrations and non-human images instead. This gets around the problem that arises when a young model may not give the right image but an older model will not convey the glamor and youthful appearance the product is trying to represent.
