ROGERS CHALLENGES CRTC RULING
By Adnews Staff
Toronto-based Rogers Communications has filed a legal challenge in federal court to stop BC Telecom from entering the cable television market. Rogers claims the decision by the federal cabinet granting BC Telecom the right to apply for a cable television license is invalid because the company is majority owned by a U.S. company. GTE Corp. of Stamford, Connecticut owns 50.5% of BC Telecom. According to the federal Broadcast Act, majority ownership of a Canadian cable TV service must be Canadian. BC Telecom expects to have its cable service operating by the year 2000. Quebec-Telephone is also allowed to apply for a cable license. It is also controlled by GTE. Rogers has not launched a legal challenge to this decision.
