Study: Most-visited Canadian websites

Suite101.com Media of Vancouver has released its second annual ranking of the most-visited Canadian-owned websites. The rankings are drawn from data collected by online usage tracking service Alexa.com. According to the results, in 2009 the most-visited Canadian website was dating site PlentyofFish.com, followed by link-shortening service Ow.ly and the Government of Canada site at GC.ca. Music site MetroLyrics.com and online publisher Suite101.com rounded out the top five. Other sites in the top 15 include social networking sites Whos Amung Us and HootSuite, Sympatico.ca, CBC.ca, TD Canada Trust, The Weather Network, Canoe.ca, Spintop Games, Rogers  Communications and TravelPod. "It's not surprising to see that content sites remain highly trafficked in Canada for the second year in a row," said Peter Berger, CEO of Suite101.com. "What is new this year is seeing the arrival of social-media related sites in the index. It's also interesting to see how the two intersect. Content sites are using social media tools to promote their articles, news and content.  Consumers continue to have an appetite for high quality, informative content. Facebook and Twitter and related Canadian-owned tools like HootSuite are fantastic vehicles to increase readership."
