INTERNET REGISTRATION AUTHORITY APPOINTS DOMAIN DISPUTE ARBITERS

The Ottawa-based Canadian Internet Registration Authority has appointed two firms to provide alternate dispute resolution services concerning dot-ca Internet domain names. The firms are the British Columbia International Commercial Arbitration Centre of Vancouver and Resolution Canada Inc. of Don Mills, ON. The former firm will provide services in French through its partner firm, the Centre d'arbitratge commercial national et international du Québec. These firms were hired following a national request for proposals. They will handle resolution between parties claiming bad faith registration of a dot-ca domain name without involving the court system, in accordance with CIRA's Dispute Resolution Policy. "By enacting this policy CIRA is discouraging cyber-squatting, an activity that has plagued the development of online commerce and has cost small and large businesses," said Maureen Cubberley, chair of CIRA's board of directors. "This policy does not replace the courts but it does provide an accessible forum for the resolution of dot-ca domain name disputes." CIRA is the not-for-profit corporation that operates the dot-ca Internet domain.
